Karate-do begins and ends with rei (respect)

At SAGA our head instructor Rob has experience in both traditional and non traditional karate styles combining them both together for an all rounded style of Striking And Grappling.

What is karate?

Karate developed from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts (called te (手), "hand"; tī in Okinawan) under the influence of Chinese martial arts. While modern karate is primarily a striking art that uses punches and kicks, traditional karate also employs throwing and joint locking techniques.

Karate is a diverse martial art that encompasses both striking and grappling techniques, offering practitioners a comprehensive approach to self-defense and physical fitness. Striking in karate involves the use of powerful punches, kicks, knee strikes, and elbow strikes, all executed with precision and speed to incapacitate an opponent. These techniques are often practiced through kata (pre-arranged forms) and kumite (sparring), which help students develop timing, distance control, and effective application of force. On the other hand, grappling in karate, though less emphasized than striking, includes joint locks, throws, and sweeps, which are designed to control or neutralize an opponent through close-quarters combat. This dual focus on striking and grappling not only enhances a martial artist's versatility but also builds confidence, discipline, and physical conditioning, making karate a well-rounded and effective martial art.

Robs mission is to bring karate to Cheltenham and surrounding areas including Bishops Cleeve, Woodmancote, Prestbury and Tewkesbury at an affordable price whilst maintaining high quality teaching standards.

Rob started off quite young in Japanese JuJitsu in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu in Northamptonshire. Later in his adult years Rob moved to Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham and started kenpo karate and western kickboxing. After gaining his 1st Dan in karate, Rob wanted to learn more styles and took up K1 Kickboxing, Judo and eventually Kudo which is a hybrid martial art of Karate and Judo. Rob still trains frequently as the development of martial arts is a life long practice .

Striking and Grappling Academy has been a few years in the making and is now coming to life at Southam Village Hall. Starting off with junior combat Karate and eventually SAGA will be starting up more lessons including Kickboxing and adult Karate with opportunities to attend seminars and competitions throughout the year across the UK.

Cross training is very important for becoming an all rounded martial artist so practicing in a Gi and no Gi is fundamental.
